Sufism

Niyyah — the inner orientation that distinguishes practice from habit. Said quietly before every act.

Receive each breath as given. Notice gratitude on the inhale, surrender on the exhale.

Breath imagined as moving through the heart. Anchors awareness in the affective center.

Identifying the stages and qualities of the ego-self. The commanding nafs, reproachful nafs, and so on.

Spiritual conversation in the presence of a teacher or among friends on the path.

Retreat under the guidance of a teacher. Time apart for inner work.

Annihilation of the self in the Divine. Not a technique but a fruit.

Khidmat — care for the guest, the stranger, the community, as practice.

Study and recitation of Rumi, Hafiz, Attar. Poetry as transmission.

Personal litany of remembrance done at a fixed time daily. The bond with the lineage.
